Fantastic late season powder in the grand massif

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Yesterday was incredible conditions every where above 1600m. At Flaine I was measuring 50-60 cm of new snow. It snowed heavy all of tuesday night to leave fantastic ski conditions yesterday. I was like a kid in a sweet shop, just did not know which run to do next and Jack from Zig Zag ski hire had given me a pair of next seasons Scott Reverse to try and try them I most certainly did, great ski’s. Once again the Grand Massif is living up to its reputation as one of the best, snow sure resorts.

late season powder in the grand massif

Monday, April 9th, 2012

Continuous snow on Saturday as low as 1000m made for some great skiing today. New snow could be found everywhere but the best conditions were above about 1800m. Aigle noir at Samoens was excellent with 10-15cm of new snow.

excellent early snow in the Grand Massif

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

The first week of the season has been the best conditions I have encountered in the 10 years we have been skiing in the Grand Massif. We have spent the last week skiing powder every day. With snow depths between 30cm and 2.4 metres, there is a really good base, it bodes well for the rest of the season.

Bearded Vulture seen in Les Carroz

Bearded Vulture

Bearded Vulture

During a recent visit to Chalet des Tronchets we were graced with the presence of a very large bird. One of the party identified it as a bearded vulture, also known as a lammergeyer or, in French, a Barbu. According to information on the internet, there is only about 200 of these birds in Europe. They have a wing span of about 9 feet and feed on bones. If a bone is too big they will carry it into the air and then drop it onto rocks to break it into edible portions. Not sure what this fellow was after but there was a small dog running around!

There really is a lot of snow

There really is a lot of snow

Exciting stuff in the airon bowl
Exciting stuff in the airon bowl

More snow than you can shake a stick at is what springs to mind. With snow depths of up to 3 metres in the Grand Massif there is certainly plenty of the white stuff. Yesterday we had great piste skiing in Les Carroz and Flaine and superb off piste at Gers, Flaine, Vernant and Airon bowl. Temperatures are very low at present so keeping the snow in really good condition with super soft powder off piste.
